China 2012: Xi'an Terracotta Army

A true learning experience. My first time shooting RAW and my first time plucking up the courage to shoot street. This is a selection of images that convey the overwhelming assault on the senses I felt entering the Marrakech Souks

We only had a brief stop in this beautiful medieval town, 24KM from Geneva, but it certainly left an impression.

After shooting in the region of 250K photographs. This set is a first. The first roll of film put through my 1968 Olympus EE-2. The first using time an experimental film from Revlog - SNOVLOX, for that snowy, wintery feel. But mainly because this is the first roll of film that I personally developed (equal first, there were two rolls in the tank. This just happened to come out first). I was invited to visit Bristol during the annual Hot Air Balloon festival by a colleague who had recently moved there. The wind conditions meant that the balloons only took flight on the evening of the last day, but it didn't spoil discovering a vibrant city filled with industrial history and a bustling art scene. I was still suffering from a back injury which restricted my mobility at the time, and as I look back on these image now I have an urge to go back and walk around and photograph it in the way I wasn't able to at the time.

A night in luxury aboard the RMS Queen Mary. A once proud jewel of the oceans reduced to a floating hotel. She may have been grubby and crumbling in places, but the charm and beauty remained.

The last stop on my trip to South Africa, quite literally on the way to the airport. A lovely walk around a majestic landscape. As ever a little wasted on me as my knowledge of plants is very limited. I can appreciate the beauty, but know that I'll have the same deep appreciated as someone who knows the challenges of cultivating a place like this.

A full days shooting in the picturesque town of Saint-Malo and the surround area along the beach. A nice walk, and a nice bike ride on a crisp and clear winters day.

First trip away in a long, long time. A couple of days in London and a photowalk in some inclement weather along the Thames.

Sometimes you make a mistake, and sometimes that mistake is utterly avoidable. The day before this trip I got the then new iPhone 7 took a couple of shots in nice light and thought, 'this is good'. I'd taken some online comments to heart. Something along the lines of 'only 'cause you've got an expensive camera'. Rather than dismissing it, I thought I'd challenge myself and set off to Amsterdam with only the iPhone. As it turned out, I fell in love with Amsterdam that weekend and wished I'd had my X-T1 with me. The iPhone looked alright in good daylight and on a phone screen, but quality simply fell apart as soon as the light dimmed and seen on a laptop or larger. In December in a city filled with beautiful illuminations the good light fell away quickly and what was left on the sensor did not do the city justice. The next time I went, I did not make the same mistake twice.

I had no idea what to expect in Riga, and really had no pre-conceived notions on what I'd find but if asked back then I probably wouldn't have said a gloriously pretty city with vividly coloured buildings and art deco facades intertwined with redbrick medieval churches.
