France 2025: Christmas in Saint-Malo
2025
A true spur of the moment trip. I grabbed my bike and my camera. The next day I wandered the streets as darkness fell and the light and decoration of the intra muros came to prominence.
France 2025: Analogue Saint-Malo
2025
After shooting in the region of 250K photographs. This set is a first. The first roll of film put through my 1968 Olympus EE-2. The first using time an experimental film from Revlog - SNOVLOX, for that snowy, wintery feel. But mainly because this is the first roll of film that I personally developed (equal first, there were two rolls in the tank. This just happened to come out first).
See below for the accompanying travelogue post.
Morocco 2025: Analogue - Misadventures
2025
I had big plans for film photography in Morocco. I took 5 weird and wonderful films with me.
I got to shoot 1 and a half.
It turns out that cameras are not happy if you drop them in streams.
Lomo Purple is a odd film at the best of times. It is even odder when soaked in river water and coated in silt and debris!
Morocco 2025: Bahia Palace
2025
It's the second time I've been here and the second time I've come away feeling a bit uninspired. I feel it shows in my photography. Looking online at other peoples images, the best take a very low angle with an ultrawide in courtyards and either a closed venue or a hell of a lot of digital erasure of other visitors.
Of both my times in Morocco, this is the place I've struggled to capture.
Morocco 2025: Ait Ben Haddou
2025
The description of Aït Benhaddou and in particular it's ksar features many words that are magic to my ears; "UNESCO World Heritage Site", "Indiana Jones shooting location"
Morocco 2025: Art Naji Craftworks, Fes
2025
Morocco 2025: Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, Meknes
2025
A beautifully intricate mausoleum in Meknes dedicated to Sultan Moulay Isma'il, who ruled Morocco from 1672 - 1727.
Morocco 2025: Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Rabat
2025
Late afternoon we arrived in the city of Rabat and our destination The Mausoleum of Mohammed V, which shares the ground with Hassan Tower.
The changing colours of the polished surfaces due to the reflected light from the overhead clouds and a sun that was now lowering in the sky brought to mind the Taj Mahal in Agra where I had watched the same phenomena
Morocco 2025: Hassan II Mosque Casablanca
2025
Day 1 of my trip to Morocco started with the magnificent architecture of Morocco's Grand Mosque in Casablanca.
UK 2024: Kew at Christmas
2024
A walk around Kew Gardens at night, guided by Christmas Illuminations.
UK 2024: A winter morning in Greenwich
2024
A dull but crisp morning walk around Greenwich Market a few days before Christmas.
I knew there would be Christmas lights all over so shot with a star filter. I'm still not sure that was the right call, but it's good to try something different occasionally.
UK 2024: Formula 1 Exhibition
2024
The Formula 1 Exhibition at the eXcel Area in London as seen in December 2024.
UK 2024: Fujifilm Photowalk
2024
First trip away in a long, long time. A couple of days in London and a photowalk in some inclement weather along the Thames.
South Africa 2019: Langa Township
2019
A world away from the vineyards, safaris and huge shopping malls in Cape Town Wharf, Langa is a township where the Apartheid government sought to control Black South Africans, yet the people forged a tight-knit community that resisted and persevered.
Today it’s a vibrant place that educates visitors on its history and suffering through the heritage museum, and welcomes you to explore the Arts & Culture Centre, as well as walking streets full of play, small businesses, and food stalls serving the community.
South Africa 2019: Robben Island
2019
When travelling, there are places you visit not for beauty or culture, but to educate and remind yourself of our capacity for intolerable cruelty to one another - and to reaffirm why it must never be allowed to happen again.
Robben Island, home to many political prisoners under the Apartheid government, is one such place.
South Africa 2019: Delheim Wines
2019
Traveling through Stellenbosch when driving to Cape Town. We stopped for lunch at this vineyard and winery.
Whilst my travel companions sampled the wares, I went for a little wander. I don't know if I was really allowed to poke my nose in the places I did, but it was fascinating to see all the machinery used to produce the wines.
South Africa: 2019
2019
Spain 2019: Madrid
2019
Spain 2019: Cuenca and Ciudad Encantada
2019
Lithuania 2018: Plokstine Cold War Museum
2018
A Soviet era Nuclear Missile base with four silos buried deep in the woods in a quiet part of Lithuania. Now converted into a museum. Frankly this place left me with a haunted feeling, knowing within half an hour of a call destruction could be sent to one of many targets. Seeing these marked upon maps still on display somehow made it even more real.
Estonia 2018: Tartu
2018
A late afternoon walk around the Estonian city of Tartu.
Estonia 2018: Tartu Cathedral
2018
Tartu Cathedral is one of the biggest churches in Estonia and the only medieval church with two spires in the country. Its construction began in the thirteenth century and continued until the early sixteenth century. The final parts completed were its spires. The church was destroyed during the Livonian War and has not functioned as a place of worship since. Today, the University of Tartu Museum operates in the Cathedral.
Estonia 2018: Tallin People and Details
2018
Estonia 2018: Vanalinn Red
2018
Vanalinn, or Tallinn Old Town is a place with bags of character, exemplified by the near ubiquitous red tiles and bricks that give the buildings a unique 'glow'.
I tend to gravitate to Black & White, but this city demanded to be shot in colour.
Iceland 2018: Golden Circle and South West Coast
2018
My 2nd visit to Iceland. This time in Springtime. One glorious day followed by another in which the heavens opened and the wind raged.
Italy 2018: Rome by Bus
2018
After three solid days of walking the city, I did something I don't usually do and took a ride on one of those hop-on, hop-off tourist buses that tend to be found in the big city.
Vatican City 2018: The Vatican
2018
Another of those places that has to be seen with your own eyes. Every nook and cranny is filled with detail that even a gallery of a thousand photographs could not hope to capture. So many moments where you turn a corner and say 'hang on that's a...'
Italy 2018: Rome - The Colosseum and Forum
2018
Another of those places where it felt surreal to walk the pathways of a place I'd seen in everything from Asterix graphic novels as a kid, to movies via many history books. Every footstep, a connection to the past.
I visited on a bright but changeable February morning and the queues were still deep. I cannot imagine how busy it must be at the height of summer.
Netherlands 2017: Christmas in Amsterdam
2017
Netherlands 2017: The Clogmaker
2017
A clogmaker in Zaandam, Netherlands demonstrates how he crafts the famous wooden shoes.
Spain 2017: Valencia
2017
I went to Valencia in for the conclusion of the 2017 MotoGP World Champions, but got a little time the day after the race before my evening flight home. It's a city I'm going to have to return to in order to see more of the city itself.
The Museu de les Ciències is where I spent most of my time. As well as being an outstanding museum, it is a photographers paradise. Full of leading lines and abstract angles.
The Alps 2017: Out the Window
2017
Geneva to Geneva via France, Italy and Switzerland as seen from the passenger side window.
Herniating a disc two days before a long-planned adventure is not the recommended way to see the Alps and really limited my movement. 95% of my images from the trip were taken from a car seat with an iPhone.
France, Italy, Switzerland 2017: The Alps
2017
Mountain peaks, colours and textures from the French, Swiss and Italian Alps, mostly from la Route Blanche the Simplon Pass.
France 2017: Yvoire
2017
We only had a brief stop in this beautiful medieval town, 24KM from Geneva, but it certainly left an impression.
Netherlands 2016: Christmastime in Amsterdam
2016
Sometimes you make a mistake, and sometimes that mistake is utterly avoidable. The day before this trip I got the then new iPhone 7 took a couple of shots in nice light and thought, 'this is good'.
I'd taken some online comments to heart. Something along the lines of 'only 'cause you've got an expensive camera'. Rather than dismissing it, I thought I'd challenge myself and set off to Amsterdam with only the iPhone.
As it turned out, I fell in love with Amsterdam that weekend and wished I'd had my X-T1 with me. The iPhone looked alright in good daylight and on a phone screen, but quality simply fell apart as soon as the light dimmed and seen on a laptop or larger. In December in a city filled with beautiful illuminations the good light fell away quickly and what was left on the sensor did not do the city justice.
The next time I went, I did not make the same mistake twice.
India 2015: Mahabalipuram
2015
Some days it just all goes wrong. This was one of them. I'd been working in Chennai on a secondment and was coming to the end of my time there, where I'd have a couple of weeks to myself. This was the first place I visited, and promptly began feeling sick about 10 minutes after arriving.
It was a scorching day, and I'd arrived with the sun at it's highest. I dragged myself around the complex for a single lap stopping as many times to throw up as I did to take a photo, before collapsing into the rear seat of the hotel car for the long ride home.
Egypt 2015: Luxor Temple
2015
Australia 2013: The Ghan, Darwin to Adelaide
2013
I love epic train journeys, and three days straight-through from the north to the south of Australia in backpacker class certainly sounds epic.
That is until the reality of the 5am New Years Day hangover start time, the small seat which is now your bed, the lack of stops to get off and explore and that the Australian bush is near unchanging until you near the coasts!
Great experience overall. Just split it up with a break in the middle if you can, unlike me that fit it between flights.
Vietnam 2012: Ho Chi Minh City
2012
December 2012
Indonesia 2012: Prambanan Temple, Java
2012
This spectacular complex is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia and 2nd largest in South East Asia after Angkor Wat although it predates it by nearly 3 centuries.
It was one of so many incredible locations throughout Java that I had no idea existed prior to arriving in Indonesia and why that part of my backpacking days are so fondly remembered, with every day including a new discovery.
Indonesia 2012: Streets and Markets
2012
Indonesia 2012: Batik Painting in Java
2012
I tried my hand (with a lot of assistance) at batik painting in Kasongan, Indonesia.
Indonesia 2012: Song and Dance
2012
China 2012: Xi'an Terracotta Army
2012
The Terracotta Army Museum in Xi'an is home to one of the wolds greatest archaeological discoveries.
China 2012: Bejing
2012
I wonder how much Beijing has changed since I was there. There had been rapid development which made parts unrecognisable from the scenes in '80 Days Around the World' what would have been filmed around 20 years before I visited. Coming up on 15 years since then, how different is it now?
China 2012: Great Wall
2012
The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is a world wonder that truly lives up to its reputation.
A set of memories rather than a great set of photos. I'd not slept in around 72 hours, was struggling a bit physically and once I set foot on the wall was suddenly hit by the realisation that I no longer had a job, was actually at a place I'd dreamt of since I was a kid and at the start of a grand adventure.
What a place to start it.
Macau 2011: A day in Macau
2011
I went to Macau for a day trip during a longer trip to Hong Kong. An insanely crowded and densely packed place with as many contrasts as buildings. Colonial buildings jostle with temples. Apartment blocks with mega casinos.
A single day was not enough to even begin to scratch the surface.
Malta: Glass Works 2011
2011
The production floor at Glass of Malta runs on skill and heat - craftsmen working glass straight from the furnace, shaping, cutting, and finishing each piece by hand.
Morocco 2010: Dinner in the Jemaa El-Fnaa
2010
By day the Jemaa el-Fnaa is a bustling market with traders, and entertainers seeing a coin or two from the visitors. By night it transforms into a huge open air food court. Brightly lit against the night, with a myriad of scents from the cooking meats and spices.
Morocco 2010: Marrakech Movement, Colours and Textures
2010
A true learning experience. My first time shooting RAW and my first time plucking up the courage to shoot street. This is a selection of images that convey the overwhelming assault on the senses I felt entering the Marrakech Souks
USA 2009: RMS Queen Mary
2009
A night in luxury aboard the RMS Queen Mary. A once proud jewel of the oceans reduced to a floating hotel. She may have been grubby and crumbling in places, but the charm and beauty remained.
