Guernsey 2026: Analogue - Fishermans Quay

Snapshots from around the island between September and October taken with the Pentax 17, using Lomography Purple film which lends a surreal look to the everyday. A film I'm sure to shoot again, but now with the knowledge of how light hungry it is.

Whilst recovering from an elbow operation, I got sucked into watching a bunch of photographers on Youtube. All of whom shot Analogue. I bought myself a Pentax 17 - a brand new half-frame camera and I'd take it with me to Phyisotherapy, walking into Town and taking the bud home after. Shot between September and October, this is the first roll from the Pentax, and my first 35mm roll since 1999!

A sacrificial roll of film in every way. I ended up at Castle Cornet after work and needing a walk to clear my head. With me I had the Pentax 17 loaded with a roll of Rollei B&W based on a old formula and one with would be used to experiment with the various zone focusing modes and exposure compensation on the camera as well as figuring out the coverage of the viewfinder. To round out the experimentation this was also one of the first pair of films that I developed myself. A few things I learnt - lower exposure = way more grain with this film. No two frame sizes are alike. The film may move a fraction when winding and so even though it's a half-frame, the split may not necessarily be down the centre. So when cropping the scan there can be quite a difference in the aspect ratio. On the development side, I don't know if it was me or a defect with the roll, but the last few frames had a crease in the roll. As if when spooled it had folded over itself. Finally as seen in the last shot. Don't put the hanging clip on the negative itself when hanging it up to dry!

I'd love to own my own boat so that I could sail around the islands many coves and bays taking photos of all the sea-life. Maybe one day, but in the meantime I have to content myself with the occasional trip on the tourist trips and hope the wildlife isn't being shy that day. These are from two boat tours that summer.

Recovery from an elbow operation has left me rusty. Both photography-wise and physically & mentally, with a series of panic attacks. I popped down to this event to try and ease myself back in. The photos aren't great, and I could feel the panic rising every second I was there. But, I held it together and it's an important step forward.

A walk up the hill to Vale Castle from Bordeaux and looking out across the industrial north. Fujifilm recently released a camera that has an aspect ratio dial, which mirrors all the panoramic analogue cameras from their history. I've always had a bit of a fascination with ultrawide in PC gaming, so I thought why not try to replicate this with my own camera. Framing without gridlines for the 2:1 and 17:6 ratios is more challenging than usual but I'm happy with how these came out. I can't see myself using this style for street and documentary, but for the limited landscapes that I take, I can see this becoming a go-to.
