Lithuania 2018: Plokstine Cold War Museum
2018
A Soviet era Nuclear Missile base with four silos buried deep in the woods in a quiet part of Lithuania. Now converted into a museum. Frankly this place left me with a haunted feeling, knowing within half an hour of a call destruction could be sent to one of many targets. Seeing these marked upon maps still on display somehow made it even more real.
Morocco 2025: Analogue - Misadventures
2025
I had big plans for film photography in Morocco. I took 5 weird and wonderful films with me. I got to shoot 1 and a half. It turns out that cameras are not happy if you drop them in streams. Lomo Purple is a odd film at the best of times. It is even odder when soaked in river water and coated in silt and debris!
Morocco 2025: Bahia Palace
2025
It's the second time I've been here and the second time I've come away feeling a bit uninspired. I feel it shows in my photography. Looking online at other peoples images, the best take a very low angle with an ultrawide in courtyards and either a closed venue or a hell of a lot of digital erasure of other visitors. Of both my times in Morocco, this is the place I've struggled to capture.
UK 2024: Fujifilm Photowalk
2024
First trip away in a long, long time. A couple of days in London and a photowalk in some inclement weather along the Thames.
South Africa 2019: Robben Island
2019
When travelling, there are places you visit not for beauty or culture, but to educate and remind yourself of our capacity for intolerable cruelty to one another - and to reaffirm why it must never be allowed to happen again. Robben Island, home to many political prisoners under the Apartheid government, is one such place.
UK 2019: Breakfast in Brockenhurst
2019
Two friends held their wedding at a lovely hotel near Brockenhurst in the New Forest. In the morning I had around 2 hours before my train back to Southampton Airport so I decided to walk the long way around to the station. Lovely place. Would like to take my bike up there sometime.
UK 2024: Kew at Christmas
2024
A walk around Kew Gardens at night, guided by Christmas Illuminations.
Estonia 2018: Vanalinn Red
2018
Vanalinn, or Tallinn Old Town is a place with bags of character, exemplified by the near ubiquitous red tiles and bricks that give the buildings a unique 'glow'. I tend to gravitate to Black & White, but this city demanded to be shot in colour.
Netherlands 2016: Christmastime in Amsterdam
2016
Sometimes you make a mistake, and sometimes that mistake is utterly avoidable. The day before this trip I got the then new iPhone 7 took a couple of shots in nice light and thought, 'this is good'. I'd taken some online comments to heart. Something along the lines of 'only 'cause you've got an expensive camera'. Rather than dismissing it, I thought I'd challenge myself and set off to Amsterdam with only the iPhone. As it turned out, I fell in love with Amsterdam that weekend and wished I'd had my X-T1 with me. The iPhone looked alright in good daylight and on a phone screen, but quality simply fell apart as soon as the light dimmed and seen on a laptop or larger. In December in a city filled with beautiful illuminations the good light fell away quickly and what was left on the sensor did not do the city justice. The next time I went, I did not make the same mistake twice.
Latvia 2018: Riga
2018
I had no idea what to expect in Riga, and really had no pre-conceived notions on what I'd find but if asked back then I probably wouldn't have said a gloriously pretty city with vividly coloured buildings and art deco facades intertwined with redbrick medieval churches.
